The Norris Reef ( Norwegian Norrisrevet ) is a rocky reef near the west coast of Bouvet Island in the South Atlantic . It is located 800 m southwest of Cape Circoncision .
The first mapping was made in 1898 by participants in the Valdivia expedition (1898–1899) under the direction of the German zoologist Carl Chun . Another mapping was carried out in December 1927 during the Norvegia research voyage under Captain Harald Horntvedt (1879-1946). Hornvedt named the reef after the British sealer captain George Norris, who headed for Bouvet Island in 1825 with the ships Sprightly and Lively .
