North West Shelf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The North West Shelf is a region in Western Australia in which there are large deposits of oil and natural gas in the north-west of Australia in the Pilbara region . In this area there are numerous crude oil and natural gas supplies, mainly offshore, with production platforms , drilling platforms , pipelines , production facilities and other associated structures.

location

The North West Shelf is located in the Indian Ocean between the North West Cape and the city of Dampier . Dampier is the most important settlement on the shelf. The production areas are offshore and are subject to the supervision and sovereignty of the Commonwealth of Australia and Western Australia. The North West Shelf will be divided into two production areas: Thevenard Production Area , which adjoins the Onslow , and the Varanus Production Area , which is west of Dampier. The gas and oil production area around Varanus Island became very well known in Australia, as five gas liquefaction plants on this island caught fire and were destroyed by the explosion in a pipeline. Then there was a gas crisis in Western Australia that lasted for months .

Gas projects and geology

The North West Shelf Natural Gas Development Project is a project that brings together the resources of the various gas fields in the region, but it is only part of the entire North West Shelf. This project mainly includes the Burrup Peninsula , Barrow Island , Varanus Island in the Lowendal Archipelago and other areas.

The North West Shelf is the most heavily exploited natural gas and oil resource of any region in Australia. It is part of the northern Carnarvon Basin , a sedimentary basin , and again only part of the total area.
