The North West Cape (German Northwest Cape ) is a large peninsula on the northwest coast of the state of Western Australia , Australia .
The Cape Range National Park extends to this peninsula; it also includes the Ningaloo Reef , which extends to the western end of the peninsula. Exmouth is on the peninsula .
history
In 1618, Captain Lenaert Jacobszoon of the Dutch East India Company and Supercargo Willem Janszoon landed on the Mauritius as the first Europeans in this area.
Phillip Parker King came there in 1818 and named the North West Cape peninsula and the Exmouth Gulf (after Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth ).
Later, Australian pearl fishermen came from Broome with sailing boats, the loggers , in the area of the North West Cape. During World War II , a military operation codenamed Operation Potshot took place in the area.
In 1953 an oil deposit was discovered in the Rough Range on the North West Cape , which is exploited by the oil company West Australian Petroleum Pty Ltd , which was renamed Chevron Australia Pty Ltd. in 2000. renamed.
Tourists come to the peninsula for the Cape Range National Park and the Ningaloo Reef off the coast. This is considered an excellent diving area ; can there Whale sharks are observed.
The peninsula is hit annually by the strong tropical cyclone season .
