The Norwegian Olympic Museum is a sports museum in Lillehammer , Norway . The museum is located near Lysgårdsbakken in Håkons Hall and has been part of the Maihaugen Open Air Museum since February 12, 2016 .

It is the only museum in Northern Europe that covers the complete history of the Olympic Games from ancient times to the present. In addition to the historical section with films and exhibits from various summer and winter games and a special exhibition on the XVII. 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , the museum also includes the Gallery of Honor of Norwegian Sports.

In the newly designed exhibitions, many original exhibits such as B. sports equipment, pieces of equipment, medals and clothing, the Olympic history is clearly presented. The museum's collection includes around 6000 items. The presentation is supported by many historical film and sound recordings, photos, multilingual texts, as well as interactive elements. The sporting events of the Olympic Games are embedded in a social and political context. In addition to an impressive collection of medals, including all the original medals of the most successful alpinist of all time, Kjetil André Aamodt , the museum also shows an extensive collection of original torches from the Olympic torch relays of the various games.

The museum was opened on November 27, 1997 by His Majesty King Harald V and Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway in the Håkonshalle. It was part of the post-use concept for the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. The construction, as well as the acquisition of the collection, was financed with 18 million Norwegian kroner from the after-use fund of the games. On February 12, 2016, the museum was reopened in the main building of the Maihaugen open-air museum.

The Norwegian Olympic Museum has the status of the national museum of sports in Norway. Together with the Maihaugen , Aulestad , Bjerkebæk and the Norwegian Postal Museum , the Norwegian Olympic Museum is part of the consolidated Lillehammer museum .
