Notacanthus bonaparte is a deep-sea fish from the family of thornback eels (Notacanthidae). It occurs in the eastern Atlantic from the Faroe Islands via Ireland , Ireland to Cap Blanc (Mauritania) and in the western Mediterranean at depths of 400 to 2000 meters.

Notacanthus bonaparte becomes 26 cm long and is one of the smaller species of the genus Notacanthus . The species has an eel-like body that is long but flattened at the side. The tail is slender and pointed. A caudal fin is missing. From the dorsal fin only solitary fin spines remain. Dorsal soft rays are not present. The eye is medium-sized, the mouth small and subordinate. Notacanthus bonaparte is gray-yellow to pink, the sides have a silvery sheen. The species shows a sexual dimorphism . Males stay smaller and have enlarged nasal rosettes.
Way of life
Notacanthus bonaparte hovers and swims in a slightly inclined position, with its head down. Often caught in large numbers, they adopt a sociable way of life. It feeds on sessile and mobile invertebrates such as bryozoans , brittle stars , amphipods and sponges . The Mediterranean population spawns from June to July.
