Notocera is a genus of humpback chirps (Membracidae), of which 17 species are known. The genus iswidespreadin the Neotropics from southern South America through Central America to Mexico.

features

The cicadas of the genus Notocera are relatively small with a body length of approx. 3.5 to 6 mm. They are usually more or less brown in color, often almost black, but partly covered with a white wax layer, so that they usually look lightly speckled or blotchy. The pronotum has two horns at the front, which are differently pronounced, and one or more cusps on the back. The pronotum is overall very strongly punctured and covered with small thorns. The tibia of all pairs of legs are broadly flattened. The wings are usually opaque and have pores and hairs at the base.

Way of life

The Notocera cicadas live as adults individually on plants of very different species, where they feed on phloem . They're often common near river courses. The females lay their eggs in a long line on plant stems. The larvae are very well camouflaged, live in groups and are associated with ants.

In the species Notocera bituberculata , communication by vibrations was observed before mating.
