Notre-Dame-de-Cougnes is a Roman Catholic parish church in La Rochelle in the Charente-Maritime department ( Nouvelle-Aquitaine region ). The church is inscribed on the French Architectural Heritage Register.

history

The core of the parish church dates back to the 12th century and was first mentioned in 1152 as the property of the Benedictine priory on the island of Île-d'Aix . The church was the mother parish church of La Rochelle, from here the later parishes were parish. The Reformation was introduced to the church in the 16th century when La Rochelle became an Evangelical Reformed town. In the course of the Huguenot Wars and the siege of the city, the church was badly damaged in 1586. The bell tower collapsed in 1573. The reconstruction of the church in Gothic forms, including preserved medieval parts, took place between 1653 and 1665. In 1715 the nave was extended by two bays and the portal was added. After the French Revolution, the parish church was initially used as a stable before being restored to its intended use in 1802. The bell tower was raised between 1954 and 1856 and the Sacré-Coeur chapel was built at the end of the 19th century.

From 2012, the church served as a filming location for the interior shots of the church of the fictional seminary for three seasons of the television series Dein Wille geschehe .
