The Romanesque church dates from the 12th century and is located near the Zähringer bridge . From 1785 to 1787 the facade was redesigned in a baroque-classical style. The church has often been threatened with demolition, but has always been saved so far. Since 1968 it has been owned by the Fondation Basilique Notre-Dame , on whose behalf extensive conservation work has been carried out. A stained glass window by Kirsch & Fleckner, 1897, depicts Saint Peter Kanisius and the Assumption of the Virgin.

Inside there is a Neapolitan nativity scene with 75 figures, the oldest of them from the 18th century. The Annunciation to the Shepherds is shown on the left, the birth of Christ with Mary and Joseph and the procession of the Magi in the middle, and situations from everyday life on the right, namely a tavern as well as a market and street scene. In the 1930s, monseigneur John Rast (1895–1981), former rector of the Liebfrauenbasilika and canon, set up a “crib fund”. In 1940, a Neapolitan nativity scene was purchased from a Roman antiquarian for 2500 francs. This crib has been expanded with decor.
