Emergency slaughter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A slaughter occurs when a farm animal as soon as possible because of an injury slaughtered must be to his flesh even as food to use.

Emergency slaughter is usually only carried out for reasons such as unstoppable bleeding or a broken bone, which make it necessary to kill the animal immediately in order to avoid agony or endanger its health (e.g. through bleeding or pus formation). In principle, they can be carried out anywhere by any specialist. They are subject to official ante-mortem and meat inspections with the exception that a live inspection is not absolutely necessary.

If an ungulate kept as a pet is slaughtered outside a slaughterhouse , it may only be used for human consumption in the European Union after a live examination by a veterinarian and brought to a slaughterhouse for this purpose. The prerequisites are that the animal had an accident, was incapable of transport and could no longer be treated, but was otherwise healthy, the animal's body was bled, complete with all intestines that may have already been removed, under hygienically perfect conditions, immediately and after two hours at the latest, cooled to the slaughterhouse and the food business operator, who raised the animal, certifies the identity ( ear tag number ) and the treatments relevant for further evaluations, in particular with antibiotics. Otherwise the animal can only be used as home slaughter itself.

The following must be distinguished from emergency slaughter:

  1. Emergency killing is not an emergency slaughter, since the meat should not or may not be used as food, but otherwise for the same reasons. Animals that are killed in this way must be processed in a carcass disposal facility. Particularly in domestic animals, which are generally not used for food production, one speaks of euthanasia or euthanasia .
  2. The sick slaughter: Sick animals may only be slaughtered in special isolation slaughterhouses. Because of the possible transmission of diseases as well as possible drug residues, the meat is subject to strict regulations, both with regard to the prescribed controls and sales. Due to the associated costs, it is hardly ever carried out, but emergency killing is used.
  3. The cull

In the past, meat from emergency slaughter was sold at a discount in a free bank .
