Notting Hill Gate is an underground station on the London Underground in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea . It is located in the Travelcard tariff zones 1 and 2 northwest of Kensington Gardens , in the center of the Notting Hill district . Here you can change from the Central Line to the Circle Line and the District Line . In 2014, 17.40 million passengers used the station.

The station was opened on October 1, 1868 by the Metropolitan Railway , the predecessor of the Metropolitan Line - as part of the route between Paddington and Gloucester Road , which was also operated by the District Railway (predecessor of the District Line) from 1884 . On July 30, 1900, the Central London Railway , the predecessor of the Central Line, followed with its own platforms. Since 1949, the Circle Line has been considered a separate line, while the Metropolitan Line has been withdrawn.

Until the 1950s, the platforms of the Central Line and the Circle / District Line were structurally separated from each other. Since they were built by two competing companies, there were two separate station buildings on either side of the street with no direct connection. A new common ticket hall and connecting tunnel were built, which were opened on March 1, 1959. The station building of the District / Circle Line with the partially glazed semicircular roof has been a listed building ( Grade II ) since 1984 .
