Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service ( NSLS ) is a Canadian water rescue organization in the province of Nova Scotia . The NSLS was founded in 1973 to rescue people from drowning on the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and the lakes of the province. On behalf of the Nova Scotia Department of Health Promotion and Protection, she checks the water quality on the beaches she looks after. The NSLS is one of the 10 provincial / territorial branches of the Life Saving Society Canada.

Guarded beaches

The beaches on the coast and lakes managed by the NSLS increased to 24 beaches in 2016. The regional authorities in which the beaches are located are responsible for whether a public beach is monitored. The beaches are usually only guarded during the main holiday season from July 1 to August 31, daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. In good weather also in the first weeks of September. Since 1973 there has been no fatal drowning accident on a beach area monitored by the NSLS while the lifeguard was on duty.

Lawrencetown Beach, for example, was one of the first 15 beaches that were looked after by the NSLS from 1973. The beach is one of the nine beaches that have been continuously monitored by the NSLS since the start of the program.

Hire lifeguards

For parties and events, whether private or for a company, the NSLS has set up the Rent-a-Guard service , where one or more lifeguards can be hired.

Summer job and training

The Nova Scotia Rescue Service annually hires new staff, from lifeguards to managers, for the summer season. The hired employees receive a normal Canadian employment contract, which is expanded to include the special requirements of the NSLS. Paying the lifeguard starts in 2016 at Canadian dollars (CAD) 12.89 - 13.15 and increases according to training and position. The working hours are eight hours a day and 40 to 45 hours a week. If there are not enough lifeguards from Nova Scotia or a specific region in the province, NSLS will hire lifeguards from all over Canada or other countries (areas).

Anyone who intends to work as a lifeguard at the NSLS must start their training at the beginning of the year. Before the deployment from July 1st, there will be another training lasting several days.

Australia

In 1985, the NSLS began exchanging lifeguards with the Australian water rescue organization Wollongong, City Council Lifeguard Service. In the Canadian winter, a lifeguard flies from Canada to Australia. A lifeguard comes to Nova Scotia from Australia during the Canadian summer season.

Sports competition

The NSLS founded the Nova Scotia Lifesaving Sport League (former name Nova Scotia Surf League ) in 2000 . The series of sports competitions is designed to allow lifeguards to compare their skills in ocean conditions.
