Sanctuary of Los Dolores

Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (' Our Lady of Sorrows '), also Ermita de los Dolores , is a Roman Catholic church in Mancha Blanca , near the Timanfaya National Park in the municipality of Tinajo on the Canary Island of Lanzarote .

The church is a building in the style of classical Canarian architecture, influenced by Spanish colonialism. It is a single-nave building with buttresses of basalt blocks from a shallow pitched roof covered. Except for the exposed brickwork, it is whitewashed in lime white, the facade is simple, with corner blocks in basalt, with a round arched door, round window and gable tread with two bells in the round arch. The west side is survived by a covered dome with a Byzantine lantern . The poor parish church was completed in 1862.

Inside it is a Madonna with the invocation of Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes ('Our Lady of the Volcanoes', patron saint of Lanzarote).

Legend has it that the figure of the Madonna, carried by the desperate inhabitants of the village of Mancha Blanca, stopped the lava flows during a procession, thus saving the country from further destruction. It is the destination of pilgrimages on September 15th every year ( Maria Sorrows , here locally Fiesta de la Virgen de los Volcanes ) commemorating the salvation from the lava flows of the volcanic eruptions in the years 1730 to 1736 and 1824.
