Mancha Blanca is a town in thehistory
Mancha Blanca is right on the edge of the lava fields of the Timanfaya National Park . During the volcanic eruptions from 1730 to 1736, and the last major eruption so far in 1824 , when the lava solidified only a few meters from the site, the place would have been almost overrun several times by the lava flows.
Legend has it that the population got divine assistance with the help of the Virgin de los Dolores (Virgin of Sorrows) statue from the Church of San Rogue in neighboring Tinajo. With her they went in a procession towards the flowing lava stream, which then stopped on April 16, 1736 on the Montaña de Guiguan mountain and froze.
Thereupon the residents of the community promised to build the Madonna's own place of worship, which was initially completed in 1781 in the form of a small chapel. In the later and so far last volcanic eruption in 1824, the Virgin de los Dolores again saved Mancha Blanca from the lava masses - so the interpretation of the believers. The current pilgrimage church, the Nuestra Señora de los Dolores , was finally built in 1862 for the Virgin de los Dolores (patron saint of Lanzarote).
In thanks to the rescue of Mancha Blanca, the statue of the Madonna is carried every year on September 15th in a solemn procession from Tinajo to the pilgrimage church in Mancha Blanca and a great festival is celebrated. In addition, the ofrenda a la Virgen , the offering to the saint, takes place.
As part of these celebrations, the handicraft fair Feria Insular de Artesania de Mancha Blanca has been held annually since 1989 , offering handicrafts from all the Canary Islands.
