Nueva Alemania (also called Eduviges or Hedwig ) is a place in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The place belongs to the municipality Tapachula and is located in the valley of the Tacaná volcano in the Soconusco region, near the Guatemalan border. The settlement was a ghost town for a long time after 6500 people lived there a century ago. In 2010 the population was 5.
The name of the place
The name Nueva Alemania is of Spanish origin and means "New Germany". The formerly German-speaking residents also used the name Hedwig (or Eduviges in Spanish).

In the 1920s, many immigrants came to Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Nicaragua to join the then flourishing coffee business. German-speaking immigrants from Germany, Austria, Brazil and Chile, who had been invited by former President Porfirio Díaz , settled in the Soconusco region . In the course of building new coffee plantations in the Chiapas region, the Nueva Alemania settlement was also created .
Nowadays, the five-inhabitant settlement functions primarily as tourist accommodation.
