history

The district was planned by Carlos Thays on the drawing board between 1886 and 1888 together with the Parque Sarmiento, his models were the central district of Paris , Thays was particularly inspired by the boulevards of the French capital planned by Georges-Eugène Haussmann . In 1887, Avenida Argentina (now Hipólito Yrigoyen) was opened as the main boulevard . The quarter soon developed into a residential area for the upper class of Cordoba. Construction of the Buen Pastor women's prison began in 1892 and was completed in 1901. In 1929 one of the largest churches in the city, the Iglesia Sagrado Corazón , was built in neo-Gothic style by the Capuchin Order .

In the second half of the 20th century, the image of the district changed radically. Modern apartment buildings, whose target group were primarily the students of the University of Cordoba, displaced the old apartment buildings. In order to preserve at least part of it, some were placed under monument protection. In 2007, the women's prison was converted into the Paseo del Buen Pastor cultural center , which quickly became the urban center of the district.

economy

Nueva Córdoba is home to numerous medium-sized companies in the service sector and a Motorola software development center . There are also numerous restaurants, bars and discos, especially on Rondeau and Avenida Pueyrredón . The retail trade is also represented there.

The standard of living of the population is comparatively high; In 2006, 92.27% of households had a telephone connection and 50.03% had a PC, both values are well above the urban average.
