Nueva Esperanza (El Salvador)

Nueva Esperanza (also Comunidad Nueva Esperanza ) is a farming cooperative in the Municipio Jiquilisco ( Usulután Department ) in the southeast of El Salvador . The cooperative is located in the immediate vicinity of El Zamoran (also Salinas El Zamorán ) in the "Bajo Lempa" region, that is, on the lower reaches of the Río Lempa . Her name means "New Hope" .

It was founded in 1991 by around 400 repatriates of the civil war in El Salvador (1980 to 1991). 1999 succeeded the population which property rights to obtain as a cooperative. Today around 500 people live there .

In 2007, the graves of two people were archaeologically excavated in the area of ​​Nueva Esperanza . Because they were covered by a layer of ash , they were exceptionally well preserved. The volcanic ash came from the Tierra Blanca Joven (TBJ) eruption of the Ilopango volcano . In 2014, a Japanese team excavated three more, also very well-preserved skeletons, whose age was estimated to be at least 1,600 years. The people were apparently buried seated .
