Nukata no Ōkimi
Nukata no Ōkimi ( Japanese in Man'yōshū : 額 田 王 , in Nihongi : 額 田 姫 王 , German "Princess Nukata", also Nukada ; * around 630 ; † around 690 ) was a Japanese Waka poet.
Nukata no Ōkimi was the daughter of Kagami no Ō (kimi) ( 鏡 王 , "Prince Kagami") and probably the younger sister of the poet Kagami no Ōkimi ( 鏡 王 女 ).
She became the favorite of Tennō Temmu , to whom she gave birth to the princess (and later imperial wife) Tōchi . Later, for reasons that are no longer known, she is said to have joined his older brother Tenji , after whose death she returned to Temmu.
Three of her chōka (long poems) and nine of her tanka (short poems) were included in the great Japanese anthology Man'yōshū - one of them accidentally twice. Your poem # 9 in Man'yōshū is considered the most difficult in the anthology, as the first two verses are incomprehensible today and their pronunciation is not known either. For example, Alexander Vovin suggested that the first two verses be in Old Korean rather than Old Japanese like the rest of the poem.
