Nurcholish Madjid

Nurcholish Madjid , better known as "Cak Nur", (born March 17, 1939 in Jombang , Java , † August 29, 2005 in Jakarta ) was an Indonesian Muslim thinker and scholar.

Life

Nurcholis Madjid was born in 1939 to a preacher. He spent his youth in Muslim boarding schools. He studied and graduated from the University of Chicago with a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies . He then returned to Indonesia as a scientist and professor. Madjid became known for his pluralistic and tolerant attitudes in the world's largest Muslim nation, Indonesia. He was a presidential candidate in 2003. Nurcholis Madjid died of cancer at the age of 66. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
