Industrial production is concentrated on the manufacture of building ceramics from the locally available raw materials, and there are also smaller companies that manufacture clothing, furniture and food.

Nyŏngbyŏn is home to the Nyŏngbyŏn nuclear facility , which has become the subject of international controversy.

Attractions

In Nyŏngbyŏn there are remains of several temples and historical buildings, including the Ch'ŏnju-sa (천 주사 天柱 寺) and the Sŏun-sa (서운 사 棲雲 寺 and 西 雲 寺, respectively), which date back to the Koryŏ dynasty, and the fortress of Ch'ŏrong-sŏng (철옹성 鐵 甕城).

However, Nyŏngbyŏn is best known for the landscape at Yaksandongdae (약산 동대 藥 山東 臺), a mountainside known for its medicinal herbs and thermal springs . Yaksandongdae is located two kilometers west of the county town of Nyŏngbyŏn-ŭp and is very scenic, with rugged rocks, azaleas , pines , oaks and a laurel species ( lindera obtusiloba ), the river Kuryong-gang (구룡 강 九龍江) and a waterfall. The highest point is 488 m high. There are two viewing pavilions on the mountain, Tongdae (동대 東 台) and Hakpyŏllu (학 별루 鶴 別 樓). Near the Tongdae there is a famous rock, the shape of which is reminiscent of two turtles.
