The Nyamuragira (also Girungo-Namlagira , Namlagira , Nyamlagira or Nyamulagira ) is an active volcano within the Virunga volcanic chain in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo . The volcano is about 25 kilometers north of Lake Kiwu and the city of Goma near the border with Rwanda .
The Nyamuragira is one of the most active volcanoes in Africa with more than 30 recorded eruptions since 1880. New craters formed on the flanks of the volcano, all of which only existed for a certain period of time. The last outbreak occurred on November 6, 2011.
The Nyamuragira is only 13 kilometers away from the Nyiragongo volcano , which caused great damage in the city of Goma in an eruption in 2002.
