Nyandeng Malek Deliech

Nyandeng Malek Deliech (* 1964 in Cuiebet , Bahr al-Ghazal region , Sudan ) is a South Sudanese politician. Deliech was South Sudan's first female governor for the state of Warrap between 2010 and 2015 .

Life

Youth and education

Nyandeng Malek Deliech was born in 1964 in Cuiebet in the Bahr al-Ghazal region in what was then Sudan. At the age of 13 Deliech moved to her aunt in Juba in order to enjoy a better education there. Her aunt supported her in her endeavors to get a better education. Deliech graduated from secondary school in Gezeria in 1984.

After completing school, Deliech began to study teaching at the University of Zagazig (Egypt) and graduated in 1991 with a bachelor's degree. In 2003, she also completed a Masters at the University of Wolverhampton .

Political engagement and career

During her studies in Egypt, Deliech was involved in the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement . During the independence struggle in South Sudan, she taught among other things in "liberated areas".

In 2007, Deliech was elected Deputy Governor and Minister of Education for Warrap State. She later resigned due to a disagreement with the governor. In 2010 she was elected governor in general elections as the first woman in South Sudan and was sworn in on May 25, 2010. In her office she advocated better training opportunities for girls.

After Deliech fired 18 civil servants in 2015, she received strong criticism for her decision, including calls for resignation due to alleged corruption. Deliech's term of office expired on May 10, 2015, but initially remained in office due to postponed elections.
