Nye-Holman State Forest is a state forest in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the parish of Tolland (Willington and Ellington).
Surname
The land that is now part of the State Forest has been the land of a farm owned by the Nye family since the 1719 . Ebenezer Nye was the first known owner. His great-great-granddaughter, Alice Holman Hall, bequeathed the land to the state in 1931 to create a keepsake for her grandparents. There are still other family properties in the area.
geography
The largest parcel of the forest extends south of Route 84 , at exit 69. To the south, the Willimantic River , which meanders through the eastern part of this area, also forms the natural border in parts. Another large area of the forest is about 5 km further north. It includes the headwaters of Bonemill Brook , a right tributary of the Willimantic River southwest of the Tolland Hills . The Civilian Conservation Corps planted conifers in the 1930s that have grown into splendid specimens today.
Freetime activities
The section of the Willimantic River in the forest area is a trout management area , the Cole W. Wilde Trout Management Area , which offers year-round fly fishing opportunities. There is also an archery range in the forest.
