The foundation goes back to the legacy of Hedwig von Nyegaard, b. Müller. She was born on September 30, 1812 in Altona and died there on March 18, 1898. She inherited a considerable fortune from her father, Georg Friedrich Müller, who was the syndic of the city of Altona and owned many lands in Schleswig-Holstein.

Hedwig von Nyegaard recognized the social hardship into which widows and unmarried women of the so-called educated class often got. Widowed herself at the age of 35, she still decreed in her will during her lifetime that her millions of dollars should be used, among other things, for the construction of a women's monastery in Altona. She stipulated in writing that her property “is to be devoted to a truly charitable cause in such a way that it will also bring benefits to those who lived later and at the same time the memory of my father, from whom the fortune, which I gradually increased, originates and continues my mother as well as my dearly beloved husband and me ”.

The Berlin architects “Kühn & Baumgarten ”, which won the nationwide competition with 92 applicants, was commissioned to build the building. It was built from 1899–1901 in the German neo-renaissance style as a plastered building . It was adorned with handcrafted high quality and stylish sandstone ornaments, which are actually atypical for Hamburg, but at that time Altona was part of Prussia. After the Second World War, the pen could be repaired and restored despite major damage.

present

When the monument office established the critical structural condition of the monastery in a report in 2007, the preservation of the property was questionable. Thanks to the commitment of the voluntary board of directors and many donors, the renovation could be tackled. From 2009, the Hamburg architects JC Kottmeier carried out the extensive renovation work. After four years of construction, the facility, which was expanded by 20 apartments by expanding the top floors to a total of 71 apartments, was inaugurated. The historical facade of the former “Black Castle of Altona” with its turrets and balconies has been refreshed with sand-lime plaster based on the historical model.

The retention of the charitable status applies to the present. The Nyegaard Foundation and Wichern Baugesellschaft mbH, founded in 1927 as a non-profit housing company, jointly pursue the social welfare goal of maintaining and creating affordable and age-appropriate housing for women in the long term.

Trivia

About 30 meters from the eastern end of the building is the building of the Helenenstift hospice, which was built 8 years earlier .
