Helenenstift is the name of a building complex in the Hamburg district of Altona-Nord . It is used today as a hospice and training center. The former collegiate chapel is now used as the Church of Silence .

History and current use

The brick building was built in 1882 according to plans by the architect Albert Winkler an der Allee (today Max-Brauer-Allee) in the then independent Prussian town of Altona as a donation from Helene Donner (1819–1909) to the German Red Cross . On June 20, 1882 the foundation stone was laid and the topping-out ceremony took place, at which Pastor Kähler from Ottensen gave the consecration speech , and in November the house was occupied. The building was first used as a nursing home for the Patriotic Women's Association . During the First and Second World War it was converted into a military hospital. During the time of the Federal Republic of Germany, the monastery was a retirement home.

The chapel, which previously belonged to the Helenenstift, was transferred to the Hamburg State Church in 1955 and was renamed the Christophorus Church, from 2009 also called the "Church of Silence".

The Hamburg hospice in the Helenenstift and the outpatient hospice counseling service of the Hamburger Hospiz eV are located in parts of the building. The inpatient hospice was opened in October 2001 after extensive restoration and provides space for 16 people. The hospice association also offers mourning and educational work. The former member of parliament Petra Brinkmann (SPD) is the first chairwoman of the development association that owns the part of the building .

The headquarters of the DRK sisterhood is located in another part of the winding house. It maintains a training center there for internal events.
