Helene thunder , born Schröder (* 27. December 1819 in Hamburg , † thirtieth November 1909 in Altona-Neumühlen ) was a German benefactor and benefactress.

Life

She was the eldest daughter of Johann Heinrich Schröder (1784-1883), merchant and banker in Hamburg and London, who had been raised to the Prussian baron status in 1868 , and Henriette von Schwartz (1798-1889).

On September 13, 1838, Helene married the merchant and banker Bernhard Donner (born November 30, 1808 in Altona ; † November 27, 1865 in Neumühlen), owner of the " Conrad Hinrich Donner Bank " (moved to Hamburg), heir of his father's possessions and builder of Donner Castle . He was the son of the entrepreneur and bank founder Conrad Hinrich Donner (1774-1854) and Elisabeth Willink (1784-1826).

After 27 years of marriage, the mother of seven was widowed in 1865 at the age of 46. She was one of the initiators of the Patriotic Women's Association I and became its first chairman at the founding meeting in Donner Castle in December 1869. In 1882 she had a home and a training center for nurses built on Allee in Altona. This Helenenstift , named after her, still exists today. The associated Helenenkapelle (later Christophoruskirche , today the Church of Silence ) was consecrated in 1894. The organ made by the Hamburg organ builder Christian Heinrich Wolfsteller (1830–1897) and donated by Helene Donner was put into operation at the same time. The church is located on Helenenstrasse, named after Helene Donner .

On June 18, 1898, Kaiser Wilhelm II awarded her the Order of Wilhelm . Altona was then part of Prussia .
