Today's Donner & Reuschel Aktiengesellschaft was founded in 1798 by the Hamburg merchant and shipowner Conrad Hinrich Donner as "Hamburger Banco" in Altona , which was then managed by the Danish king in personal union as Duke of Holstein . She turned primarily to forwarders , shipping lines and supported the Commission's trade in goods imports. In addition, government bonds were issued for Denmark.

The bank has had its headquarters in Hamburg since 1871 , where it developed into one of the largest German banks by the First World War . Donner exported goods until the beginning of the Second World War . The focus was South America , especially Argentina and Chile . Before World War II, Donner was the largest coffee importer from Costa Rica . After the Second World War, the British occupation gave the Conrad Hinrich Donner Bank the status of an accredited foreign bank . The trade in goods almost ceased, and overseas holdings and foreign assets were lost during the Second War. In 2009 the Conrad Hinrich Donner Bank acquired the Munich private bank Reuschel & Co. , which had to be sold by the latter as part of the takeover of Dresdner Bank by Commerzbank due to EU requirements for granting state aid. On March 1, 2010, Conrad Hinrich Donner Bank Aktiengesellschaft changed its name to Donner & Reuschel Aktiengesellschaft . The final incorporation of Reuschel & Co. Kommanditgesellschaft was completed at the beginning of October 2010.

At the end of 2017, the bank gave up all of its standardized business (checking accounts, simple investments and loans) and was the first financial institution in Germany to systematically part with less affluent customers. Today Donner & Reuschel manages assets of around 16 billion euros and uses technology from Fiducia & GAD IT, their software Bank21 .
