Stories of the individual banks

Hamburger Bank von 1861 Volksbank eG

The Hamburger Bank von 1861 Volksbank eG can be traced back to the establishment of the Harburg Advance Association on July 24, 1861. On January 1, 1862, it officially began operations. In 1926 the city of Hamburg got a bank for the promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises, the Hamburger Bank from 1926. In 1938 the credit bank (name since 1901) was renamed Volksbank Harburg-Wilhelmsburg and merged in 1939/1940 with the Hamburger Bank from 1926 to the Hamburger Bank from 1861. With the next merger with Volksbank Hamburg-Nord in 1980, the balance sheet total climbed over 500 million DM. In 1982, the number of members rose to over 20,000 due to another merger with Geesthacht Volksbank. In 1997, the merger with Niederelbische Volksbank followed. The Hamburger Bank von 1861 Volksbank eG merged in 2007 with the Volksbank Hamburg Ost-West eG to form today's Hamburger Volksbank eG.

Volksbank Hamburg Ost-West eG

The Volksbank Hamburg Ost-West eG was founded in 1980 from the Wandsbeker Volksbank and the Altonaer Volksbank.

Wandsbeker Volksbank was founded on the establishment of an advance payment association in Wandsbek in 1869, which was then renamed Wandsbeker Bank in 1892. Another name change to Wandsbeker Volksbank took place in 1953.

The Altonaer Volksbank was founded as a Handwerker Genossenschaftskasse zu Altona in 1901, which was then renamed a Handwerkerbank in 1903. Another name change to Altonaer Bank took place in 1927. The name Altonaer Volksbank was then chosen in 1941. In 1972 the Altonaer Volksbank took on the Volksbank Wedel, which was founded in 1929 as the Loan Bank Wedel.
