O'Brien memorial

The O'Brien Memorial is a memorial in honor of Major General Johann Freiherr von O'Brien . It was built in 1909 and is located opposite Überfuhrstraße 15-17 on the northern edge of the Aupark in Jedlesee , a district of the 21st Viennese district of Floridsdorf .

The monument is a listed building and is also listed as a work of art in public spaces .

Historical background

In the run-up to the Battle of Aspern , the French tried to cross the Danube near Nussdorf and had already formed an improvised bridgehead on the opposite bank at the level of the Schwarzlackenau (today's Jedlesee) . O'Brien succeeded in a leading role on May 13, 1809 in defeating the French in an improvised bridgehead. As a result, Napoleon's troops were only able to cross the Danube days later (on May 20 at Aspern ), and this in turn enabled the Austrian army to be properly deployed.

On the occasion of the centenary of the French battles in Schwarzlackenau, the Jedlesee Beautification Association commissioned a memorial, which was unveiled on June 17, 1909.

An obelisk around five meters high is placed on a three-tiered base . On this sits a bronze eagle with spread wings, of the in-mouth orb holds. On the front of the obelisk is a bronze portrait relief of Johann Freiherr von O'Brien, which is surrounded by laurel branches and with A. Weinguni senior. is signed. On the left and right side of the obelisk there is a bronze medallion of inscriptions . On the left with the inscription "the victorious defenders of the Schwarzlackenau and their heroic leader" and on the right with the inscription "for the celebration of the century in loyalty and honor of the Jedlesee beautification association". In addition, a rectangular bronze plaque with the inscriptions “Renovated 2.X.1932 / Hesserbund” and “Renovated for the 150th memorial day / May 1959 / the last Hessians” is attached to the left and right at the foot of the obelisk.
