Johann von O'Brien
Johann Freiherr von O'Brien , Count von Thomond (* 1775 near Karánsebes , Banat , † September 5, 1830 in Pest ), was an Austrian major general with Irish roots.
Life
On May 13, 1809, as a major of Lower Austrian Infantry Regiment No. 49, he succeeded in preventing the formation of a bridgehead for the French on the left bank of the Danube near Jedlesee and thus enabling the troops under Archduke Carl to deploy in the north of Vienna. The French under Napoleon , who occupied Vienna without a fight on the right bank of the Danube on the same day , were therefore only able to cross the Danube southeast of Vienna at Lobau on May 20 , where the battle of Aspern then took place. When French after taking Vienna troops on the left bank opposite; in May 1809 Nussdorf began to set in order to create the conditions for a Danube crossing, the infantry regiment 49 was no. This act of arms was a prerequisite for Archduke Carl's success at Aspern. O'Brien was awarded the Maria Theresa Order . In his honor, a memorial was erected in Jedlesee , a five-meter-high obelisk with an orb on which a standing eagle with outstretched wings is created by A. Weinguni (unveiled on June 17, 1909; renovated in 1932 and 1959). According to him also that is O'Brien-Gasse in the 21st district of Vienna Floridsdorf named (appointed on 27 June 1913), both near the former battlefield. The Hesser monument of the 49th Infantry Regiment on the Gürtel near Vienna's Westbahnhof also records this act of arms.
