O'Donoghue's Pub (actually: O'Donoghue's Bar ) is one of the most famous pubs in Dublin , Ireland . It's located at 15 Merrion Row, near St. Stephen's Green in the south of the city.

Originally built as a grocery store in 1789, it became a pub in 1934 when it was taken over by the O'Donoghue family. The pub is closely linked to traditional Irish music. For example, the well-known Irish folk band The Dubliners formed here and gave their first concerts in the early 1960s. Many other influential musicians also played at O'Donoghue's Pub, such as Christy Moore , The Fureys, Seamus Ennis, Joe Heaney and Phil Lynott .

In the main room of the pub there is a long counter on one side and a shelf on the opposite wall for storing glasses. The only available seating is a corner bench and a couple of stools, which are at the only table in the pub and reserved for the musicians. The floor consists of uneven stone slabs. On the walls of the main room there are numerous mementos of the Dubliners, such as photos, autographs, posters from concerts or paintings by the band.

There is also a so-called lounge in the pub with more seating and tables. Here too, as is customary in pubs, guests have to get their drinks themselves from the counter. Since the lounge is its own separate room, you cannot really hear the live music being played.

The unusual way of serving beer and paying for it is also remarkable. If the pub is full, it is almost impossible to get to the counter. In this case, the person at the bar (often the boss himself) adds the filled pints to the crowd. These are passed on until someone keeps the beer (usually Guinness ). The customer returns the money to the counter in the same way. Many regular customers also simply flip the coins over the crowd to the counter.

In 1988 the pub was taken over by the landlord Oliver Barden, who continues the musical tradition. The place has now become one of Dublin's tourist attractions and can be found in almost every Ireland travel guide.
