OCPP

OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) ( German : Free Charging Point Communication Standard ) is a universal application protocol that standardizes communication between charging stations for electric cars (EV) and a central management system. It is comparable to the communication protocol of cellular networks.

OCPP was created on the initiative of the E-Laad Foundation in the Netherlands . The purpose of OCPP is to enable manufacturer-independent communication between electric car charging stations and various billing and management systems of charging infrastructures via an open application protocol. Today, OCPP is used worldwide as a universal communication protocol in the field of charging infrastructures.

Advantages of OCPP

Charging station operators are less dependent on individual system suppliers thanks to a universal communication protocol. For example, if a single manufacturer of charging station infrastructure ceases to operate, its already installed components can be integrated into the infrastructure of another supplier via the universal OCPP protocol.

OCPP, thanks to the manufacturer-independent protocol, enables the already installed infrastructure to continue to be operated when small charging networks are merged into a larger charging network. This improves the investment security of infrastructure builders.

Versions of OCPP

There are different versions of the OCPP protocol:

OCPP worldwide

The OCPP has so far only been established in Europe and Asia . In the United States , however, it was the Department of Energy (DOE) previously of the opinion that the various energy networks had sufficient for different charging infrastructures size. For this reason, network operators , who are often also manufacturers of charging infrastructures, have been given a free choice of protocol.

However, the US Department of Energy has been increasing its efforts to interoperate charging station networks since 2013. In the future, this should ensure that vehicles, charging stations, communication and network systems work in harmony with the power grid. An electric vehicle smart grid interoperability center, just outside of Chicago, is doing research on the harmonization of smart grid technologies.

criticism

As part of the introduction of battery-electric vehicles ( electric cars ) in their vehicle fleet, employees of the Fraunhofer Society dealt with the security of OCPP (version 1.5 and 1.6). It was found that the accounting data is transferred to the central accounting server without protection.
