Oreya is a mixed a cappella chamber choir from Zhytomyr , Ukraine , which performs internationally in concerts and competitions.

history

The Oreya Choir was founded in 1986 by Alexander Vatsek, who has directed it ever since. The program focuses on choral works from Ukraine on the one hand, and international, often sacred choral music on the other, for example Alfred Schnittke's Pater Noster , Samuel Barbers Agnus Dei , Eric Whitacres Lux Aurumque , Arvo Pärt's Kyrie and Hyo-Won Woos Gloria (1972).

The choir has won prizes in international choir competitions such as the International Robert Schumann Choir Competition and the 14th International Chamber Choir Competition Marktoberdorf 2015, at which Oreya received, among other things, a special prize for the best interpretation of a sacred choral work for Schnittkes Lord Jesus Christ . The choir appeared at the Aachen Biennale 2009 both in individual concerts and in the final concert together with six other international choirs in Leonard Bernstein's Kaddish .

Daniel Honsack, a reviewer of the Wiesbadener Tagblatt , wrote about Oreya's concert in St. Martin, Idstein : “The choir impresses with its gentle sustainability and haunting sharpness. The tonal homogeneity is amazing, which is retained even when the choir is set up in a seemingly chaotic manner. The individual vocal groups shine with their own timbres that can be mixed together again and again. "

In June 2016 the choir performed in Israel, together with the Gary Bertini Israel Choir , in gala concerts of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra , conducted by Vasily Petrenko , in Rachmaninoff's choral symphony The Bells .
