The Oakland Oaks were an American basketball franchise based in Oakland , California and a founding member of the American Basketball Association . They were founded in February 1967 as Oakland Americans , but changed their name to Oaks before the league started in the fall. The team played in the ABA from 1967 to 1969, the team colors were green and gold.

The owner of the Oaks was singer Pat Boone . They were probably known for contract disputes with the San Francisco Warriors in the NBA over the rights to the Star player Rick Barry as for any performance on the court. Barry, a former rookie of the year who led the Warriors into the NBA finals in 1966/67, was so angry that management did not reward him for the certainly motivating prizes, which he believed was justified in the 1967 season / 68 suspended. He joined the Oaks the following year and led the team to their only ABA championship in 1968/69.

With or without Barry, the crew turned out to be a bad investment for Boone and his co-owners. Despite winning the championship, the Oaks were an abysmal letdown at the box office, in large part due to their proximity to the Warriors from the NBA. The team was sold and moved to Washington in 1969-70, where it was renamed Washington Capitols . After only one season in the US capital, the team moved to Norfolk , Virginia before the 1970/71 season and became the Virginia Squires . The Squires were dissolved after the 1975/76 season, so they were no longer available for the union between ABA and NBA, which took place just weeks later.

An earlier version of the Oakland Oaks played in the American Basketball League in 1962 .
