Sângeorgiu de Pădure [ ˈsɨndʒeordʒiu de ˈpədure ]; ( German  Sankt Georgen auf der Heide ; Hungarian Erdőszentgyörgy ) is a small town in the Mureș district in Romania .

location

Sângeorgiu de Pădure is located about in the middle of Transylvania on the Târnava Mică ( Little Kokel ) river. The district capital Târgu Mureş is located about 25 km northwest.

history

Archaeological excavations show that the region has been settled since the Bronze and Iron Ages . The remains of a settlement from Roman times have been discovered on the city's territory .

The first documentary mention was made in 1333 under the Latin name Sancto Georgio. The place was then in the Kingdom of Hungary and later belonged to the Principality of Transylvania and Austria-Hungary . It was shaped by the Hungarian noble family Rhédey for several centuries.

As a result of the First World War , Sângeorgiu de Pădure came to Romania with the Treaty of Trianon . As a result of the Second Vienna Arbitration , the place, which then as now had a Hungarian majority, became part of Hungary again from 1940 to 1944.

In 1950 the place became a local administrative center; In 2003 Sângeorgiu de Pădure was given city status.

The most important branches of industry are trade, agriculture and wood processing.

In the 1850 census, of the 3354 inhabitants in the area of ​​today's city, 2,113 were Hungarians , 824 Romanians , 261 Roma and 148 Jews . Of these, 1449 lived in Sângeorgiu de Pădure in the narrower sense, the rest in the villages that are incorporated today. In 2002, 5,492 people were registered in the community, including 4,149 Hungarians, 1096 Romanians, 244 Roma and two Romanian Germans . 4748 lived in the actual city, 744 in the three incorporated villages.

Sângeorgiu de Pădure is on the railway line from Blaj to Praid . This is currently (2009) being served by the private provider Regiotrans . Around six local trains run in both directions per day. There are regular bus connections to Târgu Mureș .
