Varades ( Breton : Gwared ) is a town and commune Déléguée in the French community Loireauxence with 3,770 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loire-Atlantique in the Region Pays de la Loire . The inhabitants are called Varadais .
Since January 1, 2016, the municipality of Varades has been part of the Commune nouvelle Loireauxence together with the former municipalities of Belligné , La Chapelle-Saint-Sauveur and La Rouxière . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Ancenis and the Canton of Ancenis .

Varades lies on the Loire and extends into the Muscadet-Coteaux de la Loire and Coteaux d'Ancenis wine-growing regions . The A11 autoroute and the former national routes 23 and 752 run through the area .

Varades airfield
During the Second World War in 1944 there was a field airfield of the German Air Force 2.5 km southwest of Varades . From mid-June 1944, the 9th Squadron of Destroyer Wing 1 (9th / ZG 1), which was withdrawn in mid-July , was located here, equipped with the Ju 88C . Then Bf 109G of Group I of Jagdgeschwader 27 (I./JG 27) were stationed here until shortly before the end of the month .
