The Oaxaca Screech Owl ( Megascops lambi ) is a species from the family of real owls. It occurs exclusively in Central America.

Appearance

With a body size of about 20 to 22 centimeters, the mountain forest screech owl is a small to medium-sized species within its genus. It is similar to the eastern screech owl in size and plumage, but is more intense wine-reddish. The top of the body is noticeably darker. The wings are rounded. The beak is olive green and the eyes are yellow.

Within its range, the Oaxaca screech owl can be confused with several other owl species. In addition to the east screech owl, which has more feathered toes than the Oaxaca screech owl, there is a possibility of confusion with the west screech owl . However, this one has a black beak. The balsas screech owl is significantly larger and has brown eyes. The spotted screech owl is smaller and has noticeable vertical stripes on the underside of the body.

distribution and habitat

The Oaxaca Screech Owl occurs exclusively on the Pacific side of the Mexican state of Oaxaca . The owl is probably a resident bird. She colonized thorn forests with candelabra, cacti and palm trees. Often the forests used as habitat are surrounded by mangrove swamps. Their height distribution ranges from the lowlands to altitudes of around 1,000 meters above sea level.

Way of life

The Oaxaca Screech Owl is a crepuscular and nocturnal species of owl. Very little is known about their way of life. Presumably their feeding and reproductive habits are similar to those of the other screech owls .
