Barbra Mathilde Ring (born July 4, 1870 in Drammen , † May 16, 1955 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian writer and literary critic .

Life

Barbra Ring was born on July 4, 1870 in Drammen in the province of Viken in Norway as the daughter of Ole Ring and Thora Augusta Ravn. The Norwegian writer, who was the granddaughter of Jens Ring (1815–1874) and his wife Barbara Ring , lived in Ringstabekk for ten years in the 1870s, in the main house at Ringstabekk Castle , until the Ring family had to sell the property for economic reasons. The place Ringstabekk (originally Øvre Stabæk, or Ober- Stabekk ) was named after her grandfather Jens Ring, the owner of a large local farm and builder of Ringstabekk Castle . The Ringstabekk Castle formed the social center of the up-and-coming civil society in the region until Jens Ring's death around 1874 or the departure of the von Barbra Ring family . Her first marriage was to the wholesaler Thorvald August Kirsebom; the marriage was divorced in 1902. In 1917 she married the General Feldzeugmeister Ragnar Rosenquist. She died in Oslo on May 16, 1955.

After graduating from middle school, she initially worked as a librarian and later as a theater and literary critic for various Norwegian newspapers. From 1904 she wrote books for children and young girls and later also novels for adults. In particular, the early works (The field mouse books , mainly published between 1904 and 1919) such as Peik , Petra and Anne Karine Corvin are considered to be backfischromane . Her works, often published by the Norwegian Aschehoug forlag , have been translated into several languages, including German. For a while she was a board member of the Norsk Presseforbund and Den norske Forfatterforening . Her conservative attitude brought her close to Knut Hamsun . She was clearly on Norway's side during World War II.

Barbra Ring was the great-granddaughter of Hanna Winsnes (1789–1872), who in 1845 wrote the first Norwegian cookbook.

Her daughter from her first marriage, Gerda Ring (1891–1999), made a name for herself as an actress, especially at the National Theater in Oslo.
