Petra Gregorine Fernanda Nissen (born as Thomesen on August 15, 1862 in Sannidal , Telemark ; † April 3, 1920 ) was a Norwegian journalist, literary and theater critic as well as politician and women's rights activist.

She was born in 1862 into a middle-class family as the daughter of the shipowner and consul Thomes Thomesen and Bertha Marthine Olea Debes. She was Ole Thomesen's niece .

She was married to the newspaper editor and politician Lars Holst from 1882 to 1895 and finally to the doctor Oscar Egede Nissen from 1895 to 1911. She was the mother of the writer Helge Holst . Through her sister Sophie she was the sister-in-law of the painter and draftsman Erik Werenskiold and the aunt of Werner and Dagfin Werenskiold .

Career

She was first active in the civil women's movement at the Skuld Association and the Norwegian Women's Rights Association . She later began to train as a teacher but had to quit because of her early marriage.

However, she worked for several years as a teacher and later as a journalist. She worked for Dagbladet in the 1880s and then as a literary and theater critic for the newspaper Social Democrats from 1892 to 1918. She was chairwoman of the Fyrstikkarbeidernes fagforening from its establishment in 1899. In 1909 she became editor of the magazine Kvinden . In addition to her work as a journalist, she also translated feature pages .

In 1913 she became one of the first two film censors in Norway. It belonged to a network of writers and critics alongside and Nini Roll Anker , Hulda Garborg and Sigrid Undset .

In the 1880s she worked for the Liberal Party and from 1910 represented the Arbeiderpartiet in Kristiania city ​​council . As a politician in Oslo, she was a member of the park committee and worked to improve the living conditions of the poor residents, especially women and children. She was also involved in education and founded the Oslo Municipal School of Humor, which opened in 1916 and was later renamed Fernanda Nissen videregående skole .

Death and appreciation

Nissen died of pneumonia in 1920 in Barmen in Rhineland at the age of 57 . Two streets in the Sagene district in Oslo and in the Strindheim district in Trondheim were named after her. Since 1931 there has been a memorial in her honor in Torshov Park in Oslo, which was created by the sculptor Wilhelm Rasmussen .

A bust of Nissen created by Tone Ørvik was unveiled in Kragerø on March 7, 2015 by the former minister of culture, Anniken Huitfeldt .

The Fernanda-Nissen primary school in Storo opened in 2016.
