City gate (upper gate) in Münnerstadt

The Obere Tor is a square six-storey gate tower made of ashlar in Münnerstadt in the Lower Franconian district of Bad Kissingen .

The 36.36 meter high tower was first mentioned in a document in 1293. The coat of arms of the Counts of Henneberg is on the fifth floor . The addition of the sixth floor and the top of the tower with a stepped gable and segmental arched roofs dates from 1570. The sixth floor contains the gatekeeper's apartment . It is one of the tallest city towers in Lower Franconia .

The stone gutters of the portcullis can still be seen on the outside of the tower . A drawbridge and two outer gates are occupied until 1730 . The Marienfiguren come from the year 1380. Access to the tower was via the inside of the (demolished) city wall with battlement .

On the tower roof there is a roof turret with a domed roof and bell. The legend on the bell reads: "DEO SOLI GLORIA". It was cast in Würzburg in 1666 . The tower gable stands out due to its segment-shaped roof with pilaster strips and belts. Between the windows of the Türmerstube towards the city is the coat of arms of Münnerstadt, carved in sandstone. On the fifth floor, a cast bay wall made of ashlar with a gable roof stretches out on four strong corbels with the coat of arms of the Counts of Henneberg. There are loopholes in the middle of the tower. Above the pointed archway there is a statue of Mary made of red sandstone from the 14th century. The right side of the tower contains a door and two collar stones of the former toilet dungeon . On the side facing the city, another figure of Mary made of green sandstone also dates from the 14th century. The left arm of the child carried by Maria is strangely distorted, probably the result of an unsuccessful renovation. A modern metal exterior access was attached to the left side of the tower.

Entertains

The tower is maintained by the Friends of the Upper Gate Association (Türmerverein). Since August 2012 there has been a functional tower clock on the sixth floor again.
