Before 1938 Oberlanzendorf was an agricultural town in the Bruck an der Leitha district. In 1938 Oberlanzendorf was incorporated into the city of Greater Vienna together with the independent sister communities Unterlanzendorf and Maria-Lanzendorf . The last mayor was Andreas Radlinger.

On September 1, 1954, Oberlanzendorf and Unterlanzendorf were spun off from Vienna, combined to form the new community of Lanzendorf and incorporated into the newly created district of Vienna-Umgebung . The desired merger with Maria Lanzendorf failed due to resistance from part of the provisional municipal council there. Today Oberlanzendorf forms a cadastral community ; Local administration, elementary and secondary school, waste center and Caritas facilities for the disabled are located in its area .

At the time of National Socialism (from 1941) a labor education camp (AEL) with its own women's department was stationed in Oberlanzendorf .
