The Almaty trolleybus ( Russian Алматинский троллейбус ) is a trolleybus operator in the Kazakh city of Almaty . Operations began in 1944 and comprised a network of 25 lines in its largest area. Today it is the only remaining trolleybus system in Kazakhstan.

history

The decision to build a trolleybus operation in what was then Alma-Ata was taken in the early 1940s, but had to be postponed for the time being after the outbreak of World War II . The system finally opened on April 20, 1944, making it the first trolleybus system in the Kazakh SSR . Over the years it has been continuously expanded and in 1960 already covered a route length of 34 kilometers. As the city grew, the system was expanded and only ten years later reached a total length of around 150 kilometers. In the 1970s in particular, numerous new lines were opened and in 1982 the line network reached a length of 211 kilometers.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the independence of Kazakhstan, the expansion of the routes was stopped and soon began to reduce the line network. As the vehicle fleet was getting on in years, the vehicles had to be repaired. In 1998 the Almatyelektrotrans-Service company began building cars with Škoda components , and the Russian-made vehicles were also renewed. In addition, numerous used units were acquired from the Czech Republic between 2000 and 2005 . In October 2008, a total of 20 new low-floor trolleybuses from the Chinese manufacturer Jinhua Youngman Vehicle were ordered .

In 2010, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development granted the operator Almatyelektrotrans a loan of 36 million euros to modernize Almaty’s transport network. A total of 195 new buses of the Neoplan Kazakhstan Young Man type JNP6120GDZ were to be purchased. The first 50 vehicles were delivered in November 2012, the remaining units by June 2013. They replaced all old vehicles, so that the fleet now only includes trolleybuses of this model.
