The Bochum trolleybus was the trolleybus system of the cities of Bochum and Herne in North Rhine-Westphalia . It existed from 1949 to 1959 and was operated by Bochum-Gelsenkirchener Straßenbahnen AG . The trolleybus was replaced by omnibuses after its closure .

history

Prehistory and opening

The establishment of a trolleybus operation was planned as early as the Second World War , and 100 concrete masts were set up in 1943 as the first construction measure. Further expansion was delayed as a result of the difficulties in procuring building materials. It was not until June 18, 1949 that the Gerthe , Apotheke - Castroper Hellweg - Frauenlobstraße - Wiescherstraße - Bahnhofstraße - Herne train station opened as line C. The two-lane line was 5.9 kilometers in length. There was also a 180-meter-long operating line from Frauenlobstraße to the Gerthe tram depot.

Extensions

On February 17, 1950, the extension of the Herne station - Eschstrasse - Roonstrasse - Von-Waldthausen-Strasse - Horsthausen , Friedrich der Große III / IV colliery was inaugurated. The total length was now 9.26 kilometers. A further expansion of the line did not take place. In May 1951 the trolleybus route was given the number 61.

attitude

After ten years, the trolleybus operation was discontinued, as major construction projects in the city would have required an interruption of operations of at least a year. The trolleybuses 1-4 were sold to the trolleybus Neuwied , converted for one-man operation and decommissioned in 1962. Car number 5 came to the Solingen trolleybus and was in operation there until 1973.

vehicles

Three vehicles were required for the planned 30-minute cycle . First of all, four war-style trolleybuses, standard size II, Henschel / Kässbohrer / BBC, built in 1947 were purchased. These were given the numbers 1–4. In 1954 a trolleybus of the type ÜHIIIs manufactured by Henschel / Uerdingen / BBC was added, which was given the company number 5.
