Schymkent trolleybus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schymkent trolleybus ( Russian Шымкентский троллейбус / Schymkentski trolleibus ) was the trolleybus system of the Kazakh city of Schymkent .

history

The system was opened on January 11, 1969 and operated by the company Trolleibusny park ( Russian ТОО Троллейбусный парк ). In its largest extension it comprised a total of ten lines with a length of 82.2 km and had a fleet of around 70 vehicles.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union and Kazakhstan's independence, trolleybus operations in Shymkent fell into a crisis. The second depot, construction of which began during the Soviet Union and was about to be completed, was never completed. When one line was closed, the system only had six lines from 1995. The operation was completely stopped for a short time in 1998 and could only be resumed after the company had passed from public to private hands. With increasing competition from conventional buses and taxis , the situation continued to deteriorate. In 2003 the city administration made an unsuccessful attempt to nationalize the trolleybus operations again.

In October 2005, operations were initially discontinued due to outstanding debts of the operators and were not resumed later. In the following years all overhead lines were largely removed. The old trolleybuses were scrapped and the depot was converted into a shop.

vehicles

When operations were closed in October 2005, the fleet consisted of 15 vehicles. They all came from the Soviet production of the manufacturer Zavod imeni Uritskogo . Among the buses were the SiU-5 , SiU-682V and SiU-682G models .
