Upper secondary school (Hessen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An upper level grammar school (Gymnasiale Oberstufenschule, GOS) is a special form of the grammar school in the state of Hesse . It differs from the grammar school in that the upper-level grammar school only starts from the introductory phase (11th grade, or 10th grade for students who move from G8 schools).

Upper secondary schools are usually used in conjunction with integrated comprehensive schools . This has the advantage that the way to the Abitur is open to the students of all integrated comprehensive schools without having to set up an upper school level at each individual IGS. Another advantage is that integration into high school life is easier because the students do not have to integrate into established structures, as they do when transitioning to a regular high school. Another advantage is that, due to the relatively large number of students, a wide range of courses can be offered in the qualification phase (for example, the Lichtenberg-Oberstufengymnasium in Bruchköbel has ten classes). The disadvantage, however, is the sometimes very different technical level of the individual schools, which is why a large part of the introductory phase has to be spent on bringing the students to a common level. A school career at an IGS upper level grammar school always lasts 9 years, conceptually there cannot be a G8 upper level grammar school .
