Oblates of the Virgin Mary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Oblates of the Virgin Mary OMV have been a Roman Catholic male order since 1826 . Its founder is Pio Bruno Lanteri . They are not to be confused with the Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary OMI, which are better known in German-speaking countries .

history

At the age of 67, the Piedmontese theologian Bruno Lanteri founded the Congregation of Priests of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary (also: Oblates of Mary , Italian: Oblati di Maria Vergine , French: Oblati di Maria Vergine , based on Alfons von Liguori and inspired by Nikolaus Joseph Albert von Diesbach in Pinerolo near Turin : Oblats de la Vierge Marie , English: Oblates of the Virgin Mary , order abbreviation OMV). In 1826 there were talks between Lanteri and the Superior of the French Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Eugène de Mazenod , with the aim of merging the two congregations, but Lanteri finally considered the merger to be impossible and the two orders were approved almost simultaneously (OMV with Lanteri and OMI with Mazenod) by the Holy See in Rome.

The OMV order is now represented in France, Italy, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Nigeria and the Philippines. In German-speaking countries he is currently only active in the Maria Loretto Basilica in Burgenland in Austria .
