Obsidian Energy Ltd. (formerly: Penn West Petroleum Ltd. , Penn West Exploration and Penn West Energy Trust ) is a Canadian company headquartered in Calgary .
Penn West Energy Trust was previously an independent petroleum company with the company name Penn West Petroleum Ltd. In May 2005 the company was transformed into an energy fund company. Since 2005, the company has acquired other investment funds in the energy sector: Vault , Canetic and Petrofund . The gas and oil fields operated by Penn West Energy Trust are located in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin in western Canada. The company was listed in the S & P / TSX 60 share index. In June 2017 the company renamed itself Obsidian Energy.
