Guillem Mesquida i Munar

Guillem Mesquida i Munar (born April 3, 1675 in Palma ; † November 27, 1747 there ) was a Mallorcan painter and an important representative of Tenebrism with its chiaroscuro effects of the Renaissance and Baroque periods .

Life and works

Two days after his birth he was baptized in the church of Sant Miquel in Palma and was given the first names Guillem, Miquel, Francesc and Joaquim by his parents. His father Francesc was a respected merchant and his mother Maria a well-known embroiderer from Palma.

Guillem showed strong artistic talent from an early age. Therefore, at the age of 18, his family sent him to Benito Lutti in Rome to study painting. At the end of 1693 he became a student of Carlo Maratti (1625-1713), a well-known Italian painter of the Roman school.

In 1710 he returned to Mallorca for a short stay. At the beginning of 1711 he traveled again to Venice , in the same year he married Isabella Mazzoni , a sculptor and daughter of a respected family. Through her he found access to high Venetian society. In the lagoon city on the Adriatic, he worked for almost three decades with the renowned painter Salvioni Rosalba Carriera (1675–1757), who was considered a master of the Rococo style .

1723 he traveled to Bavaria , where he, among other frescoes at the Palace of King Maximilian I executed. During his stay in Germany he painted numerous paintings and domes, not only at the royal palace, but also in other churches and buildings of high society. This also included the design of the royal portal of the cathedral in Cologne , which was created in collaboration with Jacint Rigau and Menorcan Pasqual Calbo .

In 1739 he returned to Mallorca with his wife and children and worked in his townhouse in Palma on Carrer dels Àngels Nº 6 until his death on November 27, 1747 . Today there is a plaque in honor of Guillem Mesquida i Munar on this historic building in the old town of Palma.

Especially as a portrait painter of his time he occupies an important position. Shortly before his death, Guillem Mesquida Munar noted in his diary: I have painted portraits, religious iconography , subjects, flowers and paintings of a mythological nature throughout my career , more than a thousand works.

Numerous works of varying quality are now in museums, collections and also in the churches of the city of Palma, such as in Sant Joan Baptista , Sant Francesc (La Mare de Déu amb els pares de l'Església) , in the Ramon Llull Institute , in the Fundación March and in Can Vivot . Further works are shown in European museums such as the Museo del Prado (Madrid), the Hermitage (Saint Petersburg) and the Palace of Versailles (Paris).
