The Institut Ramon Llull (abbreviated IRL) is a Catalan cultural institute based in Barcelona, ​​dedicated to the dissemination of the Catalan language and culture. The institute is named after the Catalan scholar, philosopher and poet Ramon Llull (1232–1316). The IRL has offices in Berlin, London, Paris and New York.

The institute was founded on April 5th, 2002 by the two autonomous communities of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands . After the victory of the right-wing conservative Partido Popular in the regional parliamentary elections on the Balearic Islands in March 2003, the regional government of the Balearic Islands withdrew from its involvement in the institute in 2004; after the 2015 elections and the replacement of the pro-Spanish government, the Balearic Islands joined the IRL again at. The Fundació Ramon Llull Foundation was established as a new sponsor back in 2008. It includes the government of Catalonia, the city council of Barcelona , the government of Andorra , the city council of L'Alguer / Alghero and the council of the Pyrénées-Orientales department , as well as an association of municipalities from the autonomous community of Valencia .

The institute promotes the Catalan language and culture. The Frankfurt Book Fair , of which Catalan culture was a guest in 2007, played a key role in making Catalan literature better known abroad.
