OceanCare is a politically independent, tax-exempt non-profit organization based in Wädenswil , Canton of Zurich , Switzerland , which has been committed to the protection of marine mammals and their habitats since 1989 . With research and protection projects, campaigns, environmental education and work in international bodies, the organization takes concrete steps to improve living conditions in the oceans worldwide. OceanCare has been the UN special advisor for issues relating to marine protection since 2011.

The association tries to protect marine animals from underwater noise . B. through human activities in search of resources, military sonars or propellers. OceanCare made underwater noise an issue for the United Nations. The marine protection organization organizes beach cleanings and supports animal rescuers worldwide. At the International Whaling Conference (IWC) OceanCare has represented the interests of whales since 1992.

The association is financed by donations that are tax-exempt and has around 25,000 supporters. OceanCare publishes the donation mailing Focus four times a year and the magazine “Wissen” twice a year .

Goal setting

The association is committed to research and protection projects, campaigns, environmental education and involvement in international bodies to improve living conditions in the world's oceans.

In particular, the protection of dolphins , polar bears , seals , manatees and whales as well as topics such as dolphin therapy , dolphinariums , marine protected areas , plastic waste in the oceans , underwater noise and overfishing are topics of OceanCare.

history

The construction of a dolphinarium in Martigny, Switzerland, and Sharm El Sheikh was successfully prevented in 1989. In Japan, 2,000 whale meat purchases fell after the association published studies on meat contamination. On the advice of the association, in 2005 the UN classified underwater noise as one of the five greatest dangers for marine mammals and urgently calls for regulatory measures. Mexico banned the dolphin trade in 2006 after the association and partners brought to light an illegal dolphin import. In 2007, the association blocked a US Navy sonar maneuver off the coast of Hawaii. At the instigation of the association and partner organizations, the EU banned the trade in Canadian seal products in 2009. In 2011 the association was granted special advisor status at the UN for issues relating to marine protection. In 2012 the association took part in international protests against the resumption of whaling in South Korea. The government then revoked their intentions. With the Silent Oceans campaign , the association persuaded the Spanish government in 2014 to refuse permission for an oil exploration off Ibiza. Over 200,000 people protested online. Also in the same year, the association and partner organizations got the Japanese Zoo Association to ban the hunting of dolphin mothers and their young. Together with partners, a complete ban on driftnets in EU waters was achieved in 2015 . In 2016, OceanCare became a partner organization of the Agreement on Migratory Wildlife Species (CMS / Bonn Convention) and the Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), a regional agreement of the World Food Organization
