features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 42 to 60 millimeters. The primary color of the forewing upper side is ocher-yellow to matt gray-brown tones. Ring and kidney defects are brightly filled. A black root welt, which extends to the ring flaw and is interrupted in the middle, clearly stands out. A broad, bushy, black collar behind the head is typical of the species. Due to the very characteristic drawing elements, the butterflies are unmistakable. The upper side of the hind wings shimmers silky white.

Caterpillar

Fully grown caterpillars are yellow-gray to ocher-colored, finely blackened on the back and provided with an interrupted black-brown longitudinal line on the sides.

distribution and habitat

The yellow ocher earth owl occurs in the European Mediterranean area , in Armenia , Russia , Syria , Libya , Afghanistan , Iran and Iraq , in Turkey , in the Caucasus and in northern India . In Africa it was found in Morocco , Algeria and Egypt . In the British Isles she has been seen sporadically as an immigrant. The species prefers to colonize open, warm terrain.

Way of life

The moths are nocturnal, fly between June and August and visit artificial light sources and bait . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of low-growing plants, hide under stones during the day, hibernate and pupate in a cocoon in the ground.
